ABOUT WHEEL OF LIFE

In Buddhism the Wheel of Life (Dharma) symbolically represents how all sentient beings who have not practiced the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), or attained enlightenment, are bound in a cycle of existence whose very nature is suffering.

Our lives are dominated by two contradictory forces: the evolutionary urge within us which drives us to achieve higher levels of consciousness and the dead weight of our ignorance which pulls us back to more limited horizons. Our task, in taking up the spiritual path, is to consciously allow the forces of evolution to carry us upward and to prevent ignorance from binding us down. The evolutionary urge is nothing but the pull towards Buddhahood, and is there within each of us, but it is heavily outweighed by our ignorance regarding the same. Thus for any progress to take place we must make a constant effort to overcome the pull of ignorance which binds us to the lower stages of being.

Buddhism teaches that the goal of our earthly sojourn is to attain enlightenment and gain deliverance from this constant cycle of birth and
re-birth.

cropcircleIn my drawing the koi fish signifies courage and strenght to swim without fear through our ocean of suffering, and in our darkest hour of suffering, when we may feel completely alone, remembering Buddha is still with us.

This drawing was inspired by an amzing crop circle which formed in a barley field in the UK.
