ABOUT SECOND CHINESE HORSE

Original Second Chinese HorseIn 2009 I participated in a series of online art classes with the aim of learning to paint in acrylics as well as broadening my technical skills. The Second Chinese Horse was one of the exercises. My painting is a copy of an original cave painting (see left) from the famous Lascaux cave, named the Second Chinese Horse.

Lascaux cave is located in Dordogne Valley, France. It was discovered in 1940 by a group of teenagers hiking in the area. Very quickly, upon its discovery, Lascaux cave was seen as an archaeological marvel, a treasure trove of the most amazing cave drawings.

The cave paintings date between 17,000 and 15,000 BC. There are about six hundred paintings and almost 1,500 engravings. Subject matter of the cave paintings and engravings reflect the climate of the time of their painting. Unlike older caves which contain mammoths and woolly rhinoceros, the paintings in Lascaux are of birds, bison, deer, aurochs and horses. The cave also features hundreds of symbols of quadrilateral shapes, dots and other patterns which have yet to be deciphered.

Lascaux cave is now closed to the public due to extensive damage caused by lighting, air conditioning and the thousands of visitors all wanting to have a look. However, a virtual tour has been created for which I have included a link below.
